Fewer care staff are available to provide care to a growing and aging population. At stake is the quality of care and engagement able to be offered to residents who require therapeutic engagement. This is a challenge for our time, not to be solved anytime soon. New approaches to technology support will be required to help fill in gaps. Can we improve how we design and implement recreation technologies? Care-providers, academia and industry partners typically work in silos leading to product solutions that are often developed without adequate understanding of the people and environments they are meant to support. As implementation experts, RecTs are uniquely positioned to facilitate interactions between stakeholders, in the context of care, to enable the effective design, adaptation and implementation of innovative technologies. In this presentation, we discuss how the nature of PLAY informs the design of activity, and why RecT participation is necessary in the iterative design process. We use the experiences obtained in the development of GENIE, a communication technology designed for seniors to discuss the challenges, and shared learnings provided by RecTs in trial situations.
