Synopsis:

This session will provide an overview of practicing Therapeutic Recreation in the UK. To set the scene, the audience can expect information on the historical and cultural differences of disability in the UK. Based on this background information, strategies for implementing Therapeutic Recreation abroad, including TR titles, relevant government schemes, Leonard Cheshire- a charity in the UK that hired a CTRS, and the Leisure Ability Model will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. After the session, participants will be able to gain a better understanding of the historical and cultural differences of disability in the UK.
  2. After the session, participants will be able to identify different titles relevant for Community Therapeutic Recreation in the UK.
  3. After the session, participants will be able to highlight four tips for implementing Therapeutic Recreation in the UK.

 

Speaker Bio: 

Carrie Tse is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. She completed a Bachelor of Science from McGill University and a Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation from Douglas College. She spent the last two years practicing TR in London, UK and has a breadth of experience in the field of community TR working with children, youth and young adults with disabilities. She is passionate about her work and proud to continue to be a supporting member of the BCTRA.
