Student Researcher Looking for Research Participants

Professional Learning Requires Reflection. Are You a Reflective Practitioner?  Want to learn more?

Hello BCTRA Member,

You are invited to participate in a research project to further the understanding of use of reflective practice by recreation therapists. The study entitled, Use of reflective practice by recreation therapists in British Columbia: A basic qualitative study, is part of my Master’s in Adult Education degree at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

Reflective practice is vital in professional learning and development; however, the ways in which people use it in practice varies. My interest is in the use and application of reflective practice within the recreation therapy field in British Columbia, specifically those working in community-based programs (i.e. mental health teams, community rehab, community recreation, and adventure therapy).

Reflective Practice is “the development of insight and practice through critical attention to practical values, theories, principles, assumptions and the relationship between theory and practice which form everyday actions” (Bolton, 2014)

This study investigates: The use of reflective practice by recreation therapists in British Columbia

Please Note: We are currently in need of individuals that:

  • Are a current professional member of the BC Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA)
  • Have five years’ experience as a recreation therapist
  • Must know about and be interested in the concept of reflective practice
  • Work within a community-based setting (Not hospital-based acute care)

You will be asked to participate in a 1- 1 ½ hour facilitated focus group where you as a participant  will be asked questions related to their definition of reflective practice, use of reflective practice and its relation to clinical work. There will be an optional additional 30 minute 1:1 follow-up interview which can be conducted in person or over the phone.

If you are interested in participating and fit the participant criteria please contact me at x2017smx@stfx.ca or if you have any questions or concerns about your rights as a research participant and / or your participation in this study please contact me directly.

 Thank you for your time!
