Opportunities with Curl BC

Hello BC Therapeutic Recreation Association,

Every year, Curl BC receives a number of questions from recreation therapists who are asking about a wheelchair curling program for their patients.  We’d like to share a couple of upcoming opportunities that we hope you will share with your members, who will share it with their clients.

On September 30, 2018, there will be an Introduction to Wheelchair Curling clinic from 1-3pm at the Juan de Fuca Curling Club at 1767 Island Highway in Victoria.  This clinic will introduce the basics of wheelchair curling and the rules of the game.  Participants must have enough upper body strength to be able to push a 40lb curling rock with the help of a delivery stick.

On the Lower Mainland, the Delta Thistle Curling Club (11415 84th Avenue, North Delta) is starting a weekly drop-in clinic in October 2018 to encourage people to come out to try the sport.  The drop-in will be for people from 0 experience of curling to experienced curlers.  There will be instructors on the ice each week so people can come whenever their schedule will allow.

There is also a league that many wheelchair curlers in the Lower Mainland play in called the Worksafe BC League. That league plays on Wednesdays at the Richmond Curling Club (5540 Hollybridge Way, Richmond) from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.

With all of our clinics and leagues, there is social time after curling, what I call the après-curl, for all the league curlers to meet each other and build community.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you and/or your members have any questions about any of our wheelchair curling programs and leagues.

I look forward to hearing from you and I hope to see you out on the curling ice some time.
