Detailed Overview
The Recreation Therapist is accountable to the Manager, Clinical Services and is responsible for creating a place of learning, healing and caring in accordance with the mission, values and goals of Fraser Health. The Recreation Therapist develops, administers and evaluates recreation and social programs designed to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the residents; conducts standardized individualized assessments of each resident and develops appropriate care plans.
Responsibilities
Participates in the development of new programs and/or services by identifying services and needs and contributing to the development of operational plans, goals and objectives, philosophy, vision and mission statements as required in collaboration with the Clinical Supervisor and/or Manager, Clinical Operations.
Conducts standardized individual initial assessment of residents admitted to Long Term Care by methods such as completing assessment forms, reviewing records, consulting with resident, family, and team members. Reassesses as appropriate.
Plans individual and/or group recreation therapy programs and services by establishing and prioritizing expected outcomes, discussing implementation options and determining resources available.
Implements recreation therapy programs and services utilizing diverse intervention approaches by methods such as improvisation, guided imagery, dementia care for individual and group treatment programs.
Monitors the quality and outcomes of recreation therapy programs by methods such as determining the purpose, method, and criteria of the evaluation, implementing recommendations, analyzing and interpreting results, and modifying and/or ceasing services as appropriate.
Participates in individualized, group orientation, education plans and acts as a resource to staff, students and volunteers.
Participates in the identification, development, review and revision of policies and procedures of the department by methods such as collaborating with the interdisciplinary team, providing input and maintaining assigned policies and procedures.
Participates in quality improvement activities by methods such as identifying needs, gathering information, providing input, and developing, implementing, and evaluating these activities.
Participates in assigned interdisciplinary team conferences and/or family conferences by methods such as providing information about residents on topics related to Recreation Therapy and contributing to the development of an interdisciplinary care plan for individual residents.
Maintains resident records, statistical data, and reports in accordance with department, organizational and professional standards by methods such as maintaining resident documentation and completing resident attendance and workload measurement statistics.
Maintains inventory of recreation therapy equipment and supplies by methods such as making recommendations, maintaining and ordering of supplies, operating within designated financial limits. Organizes fundraising activities.
Participates on assigned committees and task groups by methods such as gathering information prior to meeting, attending meetings, providing input, and providing updates to department.
Instructs staff and family on individual resident care plans and the appropriate use of different therapies and creating an environment appropriate for dementia care.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy. Two years’ recent, related experience in a complex long term care setting, dementia care program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Eligible for membership in the British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association.
